Sam Case, Ph.D

Avian Research Specialist

Samuel B. Case, PhD, is an Avian Research Specialist with the Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project. His work focuses on applying ecological research to support the recovery of Hawaiʻi’s endangered forest birds, with an emphasis on restoring lost mutualisms between native birds and plants. Sam studies how pollination and seed dispersal shape forest ecosystems and how rebuilding these mutualisms can strengthen long-term conservation outcomes. His work includes developing research approaches that help restore natural feeding behaviors and plant–bird interactions for the ʻalalā, linking ecological research directly to species recovery and habitat restoration efforts.
