Lani grew up in the lush rainforests of East Maui where they gained a deep love and respect for the aina. An internship with Kupu allowed them to get a foot in the door of conservation, and they worked at Haleakala National Park for a while to educate visitors about the islands. Through this job, their affection for the forest birds quickly grew. Emboldened by their fight for survival, Lani joined MFBRP in 2025, dedicated to protecting Maui’s honeycreepers alongside the rest of the Makika team.
